IDOMENEO

Idomeneo, king of Crete, sails home after 10 years of war in Troy. He is not alone: eighty ships mobilize survivors, slaves, and prisoners. But his voyage is threatened by a massive storm. Seventy-nine ships sink, leaving only the king's ship, who promises to sacrifice the first living creature he finds if he arrives safely. The storm subsides, but his son is the first living creature Idomeneus sees upon arrival.

This Greek myth inspired German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig to write a play in 2008 that revisits the tragedy through the voices of a chorus that dismantles, nuances, repeats, and questions it.
