Southamerican forensic anthropologist, R.L, is a bone trauma expert working to identify victims of enforced disappearance all over the world. After decades of working in a field that -to our astonishment- continues to expand, she has decided to approach a group of artists with a simple, but immensely profound, request: “I have read the material data in the bones with science, and I have ended up with hundreds of scientific reports. I want to know what would emerge if we read the data with music instead. I am sure there is more there to be heard”
We are thrilled to be called upon by this request. To be summoned by R.L. -and maybe also by those missing who, in turn, have summoned her- to conjure another form of seeing or listening at these horrific events of violence. They call on us to re-member them. To weave them back into the ecology of matter and meaning that makes our world.
Can music become a place where we can let the dead speak to us in unexpected ways? How can we attune ourselves to really listen to the bones, the bodies, the stories, the conflicts, the violence, and the uneven distribution of public grieving? And what can we come to learn about how we are always woven into each other, whether living or dead.
This is a work populated by transitional and unstable modes of existence that emerge from the catastrophe of meaning that enforced disappearance entails. A work about the need to continue the dialogue between the living and the dead, especially in the context of state policies aimed at the mass production of specters.
