Chilean director Manuela Infante is staging the story ‹Was wir im Feuer verloren› by Argentinian author Mariana Enriquez at Theater Basel. The story tells of a series of cruel attacks on women. In the face of widespread femicides, some women come to the conclusion that the only way to defend themselves is to burn themselves - without killing themselves. In a self-immolation ritual, they inflict burns on themselves, which they later display in public. This gives rise to a movement that spreads like wildfire. Society is at a loss: who are they? What does their action mean? Is it a political movement, an act of revenge, or a mystical practice? Why are they doing this?
Strong, tragic and with bitter humor - Manuela Infante unfolds a play of ideas about radical forms of self-defense and the spread of violence when it is made visible. What freedom arises when one escapes the normative assignments of identity? Manuela Infante directs an ensemble consisting of five women. A finely composed piece of theater in which the voices expand, change and merge in endless variations. A collective of fluid identities that continues to expand like fire.
